I’m looking for a decent R/C car for my son’s 4th Bday. Any suggestions? I’d like to keep it in the $50-$80 range but I don’t really know what makes one better than another.

I would buy cheap and if he really likes it, then buy something more expensive in the future. I did the same thing you did when my son was 4 and he didn’t have the coordination to really enjoy it . The toy just sat around and he really wasn’t interested in RC s. You can buy some mini RCs for under $20 and use the rest of the money for some educational toys. Leap Frog’s Leap reader was really instrumental in getting my kids to read.

4th birthday?

Get this one:

Then build a bunch of ramps and obstacles from cardboard boxes.

If it lasts until he’s 5, then spend $50 - $80 on something.

I would think about the different types of r/c driving you can do before making a selection. We don’t have easy access to a hobby shop with a track and our street isn’t a good place to drive, so I never really got my son into the hobby despite having several cars in bins in the garage. If you’re space limited, a 1/24 scale 4x4 crawler would be a good option. Entry-level cars are about $100. The great thing about them is that they are slow. Most competition cars are freaky fast and kids are prone to running them into things. Crawlers are slow and you can build obstacle courses for them inside the house without worrying about holes in the walls.

The one I got was $60, should be available for that at other sites.

we have a decent backyard and a quiet street but i still wouldn’ t want anything too fast.  The crawler seems like it could be anytime fun while something more than that would be an outside only thing.

i’m so sick of cheap stuff. The cheap things these days last a could wee ks at best. He had an R/C grave digger and the axle snapped on it like 1 month later. he did like that one tho, thats why I’m thinkin of getting something decent. that pen thing looks pretty cool. I’ll have to forward that to my wife

We might have had that same Grave Digger because we had similar issues; it was a birthday present from another family . I agree with dealing with cheap crap because the amount of environmental waste that is generated by the disposable toy industry is obscene. You might want to talk to Tower Hobbies because they are super helpful in getting you the right product for your needs and budget. towerhobbies.com. They also sell replacement parts if something does break.

Running in grass really wiped out the batteries fast. When you’re looking at options, look to see how easy it is to swap battery packs, how long it takes to charge them up, and how much spares cost. One of the big failings of the cheap cars is the cheap battery and junky charger which takes four hours to charge a pack. That much wait time for 10 minutes of fun is not good .

its so frustrating, i’ve broken toys just trying to put them together. The quality in general has plummeted in the toy industry.  I dont know if there is a tower hobby or anything like that within a reasonable driving distance of me

I think they are only online. Their products are not cheap but they will last . I think you will have a hard time finding anything of quality within your budget. I bought my son (10 years old) something like this and it has lasted for almost a year. As with all dads, we sometimes get carried away with spending on our kids. The most valuable thing they want from us is our time. All the toys in the world or how much we spend won’t change that.

It’s a little above your preferred price range but the brushed LOSI mini-t and mini-b are pretty durable plus have lots of hop up parts available if he wants to eventually go faster.
